About Growald

Growald is a high-impact venture philanthropy fund catalysing the rapid transition to a clean energy future. They invest in a portfolio of organizations poised to create outsized impact on the transformation of the electricity sector — working with foundations, nonprofit partners, and research institutions internationally to nurture new climate solutions and support a vibrant civil society.

Context

Through its early-stage grants to social entrepreneurs and innovative climate solutions providers across the globe, Growald recognized that funding alone wasn't enough — their grantees also needed strong organizational foundations to absorb investment, execute strategy, and scale. Growald partnered with Phicus as their Organization Development (OD) partner to support each grantee in building that foundation.

The Collaboration

When a new grantee is onboarded by Growald, Phicus is introduced and begins with a deep contextual understanding of the organization's work, model, and stage of development. Over a series of monthly conversations, Phicus works with each grantee's leadership to articulate their vision and mission, define their unique value proposition, develop their theory of change and logical framework, and build an operational plan with clear targets, milestones, and timelines.

Phicus plays the role of OD coach throughout — guiding leaders through the process of organizational design and business planning, drawing on a self-help resource library of relevant tools and frameworks developed in partnership with Growald. Current grantee partners span South Africa, Kenya, Japan, Colombia, and Ukraine.

Going Forward

Phicus continues to be Growald's OD partner across an expanding grantee portfolio. As the portfolio grows, Phicus is developing insights into shared challenges and emerging needs across climate-focused organizations — informing recommendations for how to deepen and scale the engagement for greater impact.
