Goonj: An idea that changed millions of lives in India

Goonj: An idea that changed millions of lives in India

This article is about the innovative practices of an NGO called Goonj. The organisation addresses the issue of Resource Deprivation in the communities by supplying donated resources from the urban households or corporates.

The article speaks about a three step model of Collecting, Sorting, and Distribution for sharing the resources with communities. The innovative aspect that the organisation practice is that the materials that are contributed are exchanged for a barter, meaning, the community members will have to work on a project that benefits their community for these resources. The projects include school construction, digging of wells and other water management activities. This helps in utilising the untapped resources and skills of the community.

The reader can also get a sense of the community based projects carried out by Goonj and the support they take from other grassroot level NGOs working in the community in order to understand the needs of their stakeholders. Click here to know more
